Itinerary: Salkantay Trek 5 Days

Day 1Visit Killarumiyoc, Taray & Hike to Humantay Lagoon

We are going to pick you up from your hotel of Cusco at around 5 AM in our van and then drive for about an hour to the town of Killarumiyoc. This was built by the Incas and used as a ceremonial site to worship the moon and to see an agricultural calendar. You will enjoy breakfast at Killarumiyoc and then a 30-minute drive to Tarayoc another Incan site, it was used as a ceremonial center and a resting place for the Inca Chasquis (Inca runners who delivered messages over long distances). After, we will drive until Soraypmapa for lunch, camp and where we start our Salkantay trek.

After lunch, we have time for a small siesta before heading by foot 2 hours uphill to the amazing Humantay lake, the Green Blue Lagoon to enjoy this amazing site taking the most amazing photos. Then you will back to our campsite for dinner and a nice sleep.

Day 2Hike to the Salkantay pass & Descend into the Cloudy forest

We will wake you up with hot drinks in your tent and great views of the Andes. You will have time to pack up your duffels and hand off to your porters before heading to breakfast, prepared by our chef. The Salkantay trek will begin with a 2 hour gradual uphill until Salkantay Pampa located at 4000m. From here is another 1.5 hours until the lunch spot, 4.400m Suyrucocha, which is close to the Salkantay peak. From this spot, the views are magical and are possible to see some avalanches happening.

After a short siesta, we will begin hiking again, 1 more hour uphill to reach the famous pass of Salkantay, 4650m. You will be amazed by the views, in front of the glacier and surrounding mountains. Your guide will spend some time explaining about the mountains before continuing for another 15 minutes to see the Salkantay Lagoon. This is a blue lagoon located right at the bottom of the Salkantay mountain.

Finally, there will be a 2 hours’ downhill hike to reach our second campsite located at 3600m right in the cloud forest. Upon your arrival, our staff will greet you, show your tents, and the hot drinks are ready for you. This night after our dinner our guide is going to show you some Andean or Incan constellations before to go to bed.

Day 3Exploring the coffee farm and swimming in the thermal pools

Again our hiking staff will wake you up in the morning with a hot drink in your tent and some time to pack up your belongings. Another delicious breakfast will be prepared and then you will begin another day of the Salkantay trek. Today will be mostly in the cloud forest with warmer temperatures and humidity.

We will hike in a gradual downhill for about 4 hours to reach the famous Colpapampa, where we have our delicious lunch. The trail has beautiful views of the green valley, flowers are abundant with orchards, ferns, and trees everywhere. You may see some Andean birds, local farms with potatoes and other Andean crops.

After lunch and a short siesta, we will begin our drive a local van for about an hour to our campsite of Llucmabamba, there we are going to explore the tropical forest and visit to a local organic coffee farm. At the farm, you will have a brief introduction regarding the coffee in this region, the importance for the locals and taste some of the freshly-brewed coffee.

After that, we are going in the local van to the thermal baths of Cocalmayo where we are going to enjoy the natural hot water in the pools. Finally, back to our basecamp to have our last happy hour, dinner and to fall asleep early and get ready for another day tomorrow.

Day 4First views of Machu Picchu

After an early breakfast, begin our trek towards the archaeological center of Llactapata. On the trail, you will see beautiful landscapes, as well as various flora and fauna. After two hours, we will arrive at Llactapata where you will have an amazing view of Machu Picchu to the distance, time to rest and enjoy the scenery. From here we will be a 2-hour walk downhill towards Hidroelectrica where we will have the last lunch prepared by our chef and we will also say goodbye to him showing our appreciation.

After Lunch and break before to continue will say goodbye to our team, then we will continue with our hike to Aguas Calientes town for 3 hours approx. The hike is along the train track, this section of the Salkantay trek is interesting because was used by the American professor Hiram Bingham when he rediscovered Machu Picchu. On the trail, we will see many species of flora and fauna, including the famous Peruvian national bird called Cock of the Rock if we are lucky, toucans, oropendolas, parrots, and orchids.

Finally, upon our arrival in Aguas Calientes, we will guide you to the hotel to enjoy a hot shower. In the evening, you will enjoy the final dinner in a local restaurant.

Note tToday if you are tired, after breakfast, we can drive a local van directly to Hidroelectrica, and from Hidroelectrica we shall hike for about 3 hours to Aguas Calientes town arriving at 3 pm max.

Day 5Explore the citadel of Machu Picchu & back to Cusco

Today is the most important day for you. You will finally arrive at the highlight of the trek, Machu Picchu. We are going to visit in the morning, for that you will wake up at around 4 am to get breakfast in your hotel.

Then you will head out to the bus station and line up, waiting for the first bus which will depart at 5:30 AM. The bus ride is 25 minutes to the Machu Picchu entrance where you will again line up for entry (Before entering, take a quick visit to the restroom – the rangers do not allow you to re-enter Machu Picchu if you need to leave for a bathroom break).

Once you are inside, the guide will head to the watchtower area which is a beautiful area to take photos. Then the guide will introduce the history of Machu Picchu and explore this amazing citadel for 2 hours walking, seeing the most important areas inside, and following the new regulations of the government. The tour will end at the lower part of the citadel where you will be allowed to explore on your own.

Those who have booked Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu mountain will be ready to begin the climb and your guide will show you the checkpoint for those mountains. When you are done your activity, you will walk directly to the exit area to take the bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch.
