After lunch, we will start to climb again until the highest point of Warmi Wañuska Pass at 4215 meters above sea level for another two hours more. When reaching the pass, we will stop to take a short break and enjoy the views before starting again to descend to the Pacaymayu valley (Hidden River) for two hours. There are our dinner and our second basecamp.

Day 3Crossing the second pass Runkuracay & Cloud Forest campsite

We begin early again, waking up at 6:30.m. to begin what is commonly considered to be the most beautiful day of the whole Inca Trail. After breakfast, we will walk for 2 hours to the second pass and on the way, we will stop at a small Inca site (Runcu Raccay) to watch the waterfalls located on the opposite side of the valley.

After the pass, there’s another down hike by the slope to reach the magnificent Inca site, we will stop to rest and get a quick tour of the site. Then we will continue for another 20 more minutes approximately until the lunch spot Chaquicocha (a dried lake, 3600 meters above sea level).

After lunch, we will hike along what we like to call “Plano Inca” (graded slopes) and we begin to enter the forest, known as the Bosque Nuboso (Cloudy Forest). As we walk, we will have the opportunity to see the majesty of the snow-covered Salkantay, the second-highest mountain of Cusco, and a fantastic panoramic view of the Vilcabamba mountain range. Today we will wake you up early to see the sunset over the mountains, then have our delicious breakfast. From Phuyupatamarka, we are 3 hours walking down a path of stairs towards at Wiñay Wayna.
During the descent, we will visit 2 Inca sites, Phuyupatamarka (Town in the Clouds) and Intipata (Terraces of the Sun). We will arrive at Wiñay Wayna at around noon for lunch, and then we will relax a little and visit the Inca site of Wiñay Wayna.

After lunch, we will say goodbye to our team of porters and cooks and then hike to the Puerta del Sol (Inti Punku (Sun Gate). From here we have spectacular views of the mountains and Machu Picchu in all its glory. And then it is only an hour’s walk down to Machu Picchu to enjoy the views with few tourists. As we get closer to Machu Picchu, the views of the city will become more impressive.
